Interpreter
I sometimes work as an interpreter.
I only do it for my boss because my boss does not speak a word of English and seems he is even proud of it. donno why..
He is forty-two years old. If he stands up in a swimming suit, he can's see his own pants for sure. He is a typical middle age Japanese guy.
Anyway,
I am not a professional translator per se. But since it is often difficult to find a professional interpreter who is familiar with the terminologies and jargons in this industry, the company happily uses me as free interpreter.
I give my utmost respect to anyone who does this work professionally. I cannot do it myself. It completely exhausts you mentally as well as physically.
The worst part of being an interpreter is that I cannot make my own comment!!!
You talk the most in the meeting because you translate for both parties. But you are not allowed to express your own opinion!
It is almost a torture for someone who is very opinionated and has something to say about everything.
So, here is one thing that I would like to ask for anyone who hires translator.
If you hire them,
1. Please call them with their names.
I occasionally see people calling interpreters "interpreters" instead of calling him Mr... or call her Mrs or Miss......in the meeting.
I know how hard it is to become an interpreter. Especially doing interpreting between two languages that are linguistically different completely is extremely hard.
So when you hire them and introduce them at the beginning of the meeting, please call them with the names. They are people who have acquired great skills that you may never be able to acquire.
